Revision Prose: Copy Editing & Proof Reading

Heather McMullin is a friend of mine, a voracious reader and an incredible editor.  She has recently started a website, offering her pinpoint editing skills to the world.  I have utilized Heather's keen eye on a few of my manuscripts and it never ceases to amaze me the things she picks up.  Last year while preparing to publish The Living Hunger I had a 'professional' editor go through the manuscript, making some changes but leaving it largely unchanged.  I then presented the 'edited' copy to Heather and had her go through it.  The difference and professional feel that Heather brought to the final product was astounding.  I am so glad I sought her help before publishing.
If you are a writer and want a product you can be proud of please contact Heather for a sample of her work and a quote.  Tell her Dennis sent you and she'll edit a couple of your pages for free and provide an estimate, including a 15% discount.

Professional Quality Editing Services
I have learned much from Ms. McMullin and now when I write, the entire process seems more streamlined and effortless.   Her assistance has allowed me to concentrate on the creative side of writing and not so much the mechanics.  I no longer sweat the little stuff, knowing she's got my back and will catch even the smallest of mistakes.
Heather, best of luck with your new endeavor!

Raven Falconer: Episode 3 'Vengeance Fulfilled'

I'm in the final stages of writing Episode 3 of The Raven Falconer Chronicles.  I love getting to this stage in the writing/publishing process.  Last night I sent a short synopsis to my cover designer, Sean Strong.  Heaven only knows what he'll come up with, but I'm assured it will be unique, gritty and exactly what the doctor ordered.  Following the release of Episode 3, Vengeance Fulfilled (working title), I'll combine the first three episodes into a single volume, ~ 120k words, to be available in paperback and eBook format.
This volume will find Raven, her friends and the Huskers thrown into new, different circumstances, which will decide their future fates.  Some will die, but you'll never know until the final pages who they are and for what cause.  Also, I hope you enjoy a new character who will be introduced in this episode.  He's just what I was looking for in a way to wrap up this first 3 episode volume.
I hope you enjoy it.  Look for release in the next 30 days.

Surviving 'the' Mother-in-Law

This past week my wife and I celebrated our 33rd Wedding Anniversary, she in Arizona with her mother and me in Edmonton - alone.  Sounds much worse than it is.  She, being the devoted, compassionate daughter that she is, traveled to Utah to help her brother move their aging mother to his place in Arizona.  I was pleased she could spend this critical time with her mom, as they share a special bond - Holly is the only daughter with three brothers.

Dennis & Holly 2013

Mother-in-Law, Yuvona (Right) 1950
Holly's mom is a wonderful woman and I have nothing but love and respect for her, which has been fostered and nourished over the years.  We've had nothing but a harmonious relationship, but I hear this is rare, which brings me to a book that has captured my imagination - The Cats & Dogs' World with The Mother-in-Law, written by Jen Tyrese, Melanie Young and Tina Lee.

They are preparing the eBook for an Amazon release but until then you can preview and buy the book here:

Amazon 5 Star Review by Manchester:
"Swimming with Asian Sharks is an absolutely top quality book in every sense. The information is professional, straightforward, and most importantly, practical - the information learned from this book can literally be applied right away to a wide variety of professions and fields.

I really love how the author incorporates real-life examples into the book, I found the story of his aunt risking everything to move from China to Hong Kong (before it was a part of China) to be very inspiring and it set a very determined attitude and vibe to the book that stayed throughout the read.

What I admire most about this book, though, is that Danny Hui has made it easy-to-read and easy to understand without sacrificing pure advice; a conversational, smooth tone is present from start to finish that keeps the read from feeling 'chorelike' or bland whatsoever. I highly recommend this book for anyone serious about business, whether they're at the bottom or already a business 'shark', I'm sure they could learn something valuable from this ultimately great read."

The Lost Colony Series: Jo Grafford

Guest Blog Posting by the author of Breaking Ties - Welcome Jo.  (Website)

I am excited to announce that Trail of Crosses, book two in the Lost Colony Series, is under contract as of this morning!

Book one Breaking Ties unravels an ancient conspiracy during a trans-Atlantic voyage plagued with trouble from day one. ROSE PAYNE the ship clerk is simply trying to outrun a broken heart. Instead, she runs straight into danger – pirates, plundering, and unexpected love with a man from a different social class. She considers him out of her league; he doesn’t.

Amazon $2.99

Hang on to your scalp! Book two Trail of Crosses picks up where Breaking Ties leaves off. Narrated by one of Rose’s best friends JANE MANNERING the huntress, we plunge into a story of teeth-grinding survival where cruelty and deception are the name of the game between tribes, that is, if you want them to remain a respectful distance. Alas, there is one legendary warrior Jane is not so sure she wants to keep at arm’s length.

Here’s a sneak peek at Trail of Crosses (coming soon):

July 26, 1587 - Roanoke Island
If it had not been for the barking of the dogs and chattering of the lads who scampered at my side, I might have heard the shot - the low vibration of the string as the thin, wooden shaft released, the faint whistle of the arrow as it sliced an invisible yet deadly path through the air, the scattering of wildlife as the forest itself braced before the world’s most fearsome predator. Instead, I merely felt the gentle lifting of my late father’s top hat as the arrowhead sank into the aged leather and pinned it to the heart of the oak behind me.
The men assigned to guard me fired their muskets wildly into the perimeter of trees. My ears rang with their gunfire and frenzied oaths. Then the slow burn of anger took over.
I pivoted to yank the arrow, top hat and all, from the trunk. Separating the two, I jammed the damaged hat back on my head and tapped the lone arrow against my gloved hand. The miss was deliberate, intended as a taunt. Had the shadowy creature intended to kill me, I would already be dead.
He remained out there, I was certain. Watching. This was a reminder that he was the hunter. I was the hunted.
(to be continued…)

Poetry Collection: 10 Years in the Making

My mother was a lover of verse, and as a boy I remember her reading favorites from her Book of Remembrance.  They had been collected over her lifetime and many of those I've committed to memory - Abou Ben Adhem standing out in a special way for me and my brothers.  (I'll include it at the end of this post)

I have great respect for poets who have the ability to evoke emotion to touch ones very soul with words.  Poetry, in my estimation, should make you laugh, cry, think, but above all, FEEL.  I believe Madison Kent has done just that with her collection of 72 poems contained in the new release, Poetry From Behind the Curtain.  There is something for every taste and disposition.  It's obvious the writer has poured her heart and soul into this wonderful collection.  Take a look with the link below:

Amazon $2.99
Synopsis:
Poetry From Behind the Curtain is a collection of 72 poems that were written over a decades from life experiences and soul searching personal truths. Many of the poems have been previously published at Prose and Rhyme and other poetry sites with favorable reviews. This book was written for the fireside dawdler's and hot chocolate lover's on a balmy night or winter's day.

If you would like to be sent a free copy of this book or any other published novels, please visit MK's website for further information.

Amazon Review: Laurie B
" There are 72 poems in this collection. Many of the poems are about love and heartbreak. One of the most heartfelt poems in the collection is "The Girl with Slanted Eyes." It's about how cruel the world seems when a child has been born with a disability and the emotional difficulty the mother experiences. Another poem, "The American Dream," suggests that liberty is the American dream, and we must always pursue it. The last two lines of this poem read:

I task you all with challenge to covet and ever polish its fine gleam
For nothing can compare to this endeavor, the American dream."

A Treasure From My Youth:

Abou Ben Adhem
Abou Ben Adhem (may his tribe increase!)
Awoke one night from a deep dream of peace,
And saw, within the moonlight in his room,
Making it rich, and like a lily in bloom,
An angel writing in a book of gold:—
Exceeding peace had made Ben Adhem bold,
And to the Presence in the room he said
"What writest thou?"—The vision raised its head,
And with a look made of all sweet accord,
Answered "The names of those who love the Lord."
"And is mine one?" said Abou. "Nay, not so,"
Replied the angel. Abou spoke more low,
But cheerly still, and said "I pray thee, then,
Write me as one that loves his fellow men."

The angel wrote, and vanished. The next night
It came again with a great wakening light,
And showed the names whom love of God had blessed,
And lo! Ben Adhem's name led all the rest.

Stalking Jack: The Hunt Begins by Madison Kent

I've always had a soft spot for Jack the Ripper and the infamous legacy he left behind.  The mystery still haunts detectives, writers and anyone remotely connected to the Whitechapel area of London, 1888.  Author Madison Kent begins her tale in New York City and a woman bound for London -- Madeline Donovan.  Character development is well done and the topic . . . thrilling to say the least.  This new release eBook captured my attention, as I'm sure it will yours.  Please take a minute to read the synopsis here, as well as visit the author's personal website with the link below:

Amazon $3.99
Synopsis:
It's August 1888, The SS City of New York is about to embark on her maiden voyage to England, and passenger Madeline Donovan is aboard.  The thought of spending Christmas in America, or anywhere close, on the tragedy's anniversary is unthinkable, so she flees.  Circumstances abruptly change when the local London papers arrive on board, and the news of Jack the Ripper's latest victim is headlined. Madeline meets Jonathan Franks, a reporter from The New York Times, and this encounter, coupled with other chance events, alters her thoughts and plans, ultimately sending her on a path to Whitechapel, the deadliest place of all.

Amazon 5 Star Review by Keith esp:
"I liked the character Madeline Donovan and the way she goes about trying to hunt down Jack the Ripper. There were many suspects which kept the story entertaining and I also liked that she is a flawed person with problems of her own that she has to overcome. I recommend this book to people who like a good mystery."

World of Jinn by E Kerrigan

Fantasy writer, E. Kerrigan, has initiated a new series with World of Jinn: Awakenings.  Readers and reviewers are posting nothing but praise for Book #1 in the series and my Indie Promo Site, eReaderRecon.com, would have to agree.  Explore Kerrigan's work with the information and links provided below:

Amazon $3.99

Synopsis:
A war was fought in the Jinn world between the Shaitans and the Amin. The Shaitans won, leaving the evil King Iblis as primary ruler over the five Jinn kingdoms.

This first book of the trilogy begins years later. Five humans are taken to the Jinn world after being attacked by a group of ghouls. In a hidden mountain city the humans are told that they are in fact Jinn, and now they must shed their human bodies and become Jinn once again. After this they can lead the Amin army to victory, and destroy Iblis and his army of ghouls once and for all. Inevitably, it will not be their external enemies that are their greatest danger, but instead a traitor from within.

The World of Jinn trilogy will explore the best and worst of humankind. Its purpose is to challenge our ideas of love, morality, forgiveness and the meaning of faith. Although centered on creatures mentioned in Islam, this book examines many paths of faith and argues that regardless of where our beliefs originate, it is our actions that define us.

5 Star Amazon Reviews:
"I can say first off it was a pleasure to read an indie book that had its own editor in P Kerrigan. A nice entry to the world of fantasy with a twist of reality. I like the story line and thought the characters were will well-formed and fitted with the plot. No disappointments here as its one of a series, so happy days for all us fantasy lovers. A good place to start it your new to this genre." -- Emma Parker (Amazon)

"This is a awesome book, I'm really digging it. If you're into fantasy, action, and cool stories, you'll love it." -- BookLover (Amazon)
